If you haven't noticed, there's a lot of crap on the internet these days. Like a metric ton of crap. According to a 2025 Ahrefs study, 74% of newly created web pages contain some sort of AI-generated content. AI guru/Bond villain Sam Altman stated that AI will do about 95% of all blog work and digital marketing. Marketing agencies LOVE following the fads, but is running toward AI slop hurting your digital marketing program?

The Case For AI Written Content

It's easy. It's fast. It's cheap. And you can pack your site with a lot of it.

The Case Against AI Written Content

OK, before we make our human-first/human-all-the-time argument, we'll come clean. AI did help our brilliant creative team write this article. A lot of the research was found by firing up the ol' Claude bot with prompts to find us studies showing that AI-written blogs and content are hurting digital marketing performance. Claude threw up a bunch of studies (and a lot of Wikipedia articles, for some reason) showing that users feel disengaged by most blog articles perceived as AI-written. After a little prodding, Claude also linked to studies that show how online trust has eroded in the age of AI slop.

Claude even came up with the term "AI blog slop" when asked what's trending in the world of digital marketing. Talk about self-loathing. If an AI can loathe. Which it can't. We think.

But we humans do write blogs for two reasons: personality and trust

Don't Forget The Reason For Marketing

One of the biggest reasons to market your business is so you stand out from the crowd. Your marketing should make people WANT to eat at YOUR Greek restaurant, even though some Yahoos opened up their own Greek restaurant right across the street. Your marketing leaned into authenticity to the point where you can download the menu in Greek. Because of your efforts, people automatically think Το Μενού. They definitely don't think of The Gyro Hut across the street.

Your blogs should give your business personality, helping it stand out from the crowd. Unfortunately, AI-written content tends to flatten out originality into well-traversed idioms and blah metaphors. ChatGPT is instinctively going to reach for the concepts that have been written a thousand times over, as they are the path of least resistance. It leaves your content instantly forgettable. And forgettable is one of the worst things a business can be.

Trust is a Big Thing With Kids These Days

The minute someone suspects your blogs are written by a machine, your whole blog program is toast. According to a 2025 Statista survey, 70% of people said they don't trust online information if they can't tell if it's written by a human or a machine. Sprout Social noted that 66% of readers reduce engagement when they suspect AI content. Low trust and low engagement are typically not the benchmarks of a good blogging program.

So it's Human Now, AI Slop Never

So you have a real person writing your blogs. Everything should be copasetic, right?

Maybe. Maybe Not.

The key is not just to avoid AI Slop on your website, but also to avoid LOOKING like you have it. If your blogs use blah references, cliché metaphors, and too many em dashes (✊ never forget!), people will think you're using AI slop. Human writers need to understand what each blog is trying to achieve, then craft it around your brand identity. Then every piece of content should have your final sign-off. It's how we at Flint do it, and why we consistently grow leads through our blogging programs.
